LUCKNOW: Achieving a major feat, doctors performed the first liver transplant in KGMU’s over 100-year history on Thursday.The patient is a 50-year-old man who was suffering from chronic liver disease. The transplant cost the patient around Rs 8 lakh, which is about one-tenth of the cost charged at private hospitals. I am proud of KGMU doctors, nursing and paramedical staff and thank Dr Subhash Gupta and his team from Delhi. Let’s pray for the speedy recovery of both donor and recipient and wait for the final result,” said KGMU vice-chancellor Prof MLB Bhatt. LUCKNOW: Achieving a major feat, doctors performed the first liver transplant in KGMU’s over 100-year history on Thursday.The patient is a 50-year-old man who was suffering from chronic liver disease. The 12-hour surgery is a big achievement for KGMU’s surgical gastroenterology department which has conducted many organ retrievals till now.The donor was patient’s 48-year-old wife. The surgery began at 5:30am and ended at 5pm on Thursday, with both the recipient and the donor said to be stable. The transplant cost the patient around Rs 8 lakh, which is about one-tenth of the cost charged at private hospitals. The surgery was jointly performed by the liver transplant team of KGMU and doctors from Max hospital Saket, New Delhi.KGMU team was led by head of surgical gastroenterology department, Prof Abhijit Chandra, and other members were Dr Vivek Gupta and Dr Pradeep Joshi, while Dr Subhash Gupta headed the Max hospital team, with Dr Shaleen Agarwal, Dr Shweta Singh and Dr Rajesh Dey being the other members of the team.Anesthesia team comprised Dr Mohd Parvej, Dr Anita Malik, Dr Tanmay Tiwari and Dr Ehsan. Dr Neera Kohli, Dr Anit Parihar and Dr Rohit were part of the radiology team along with Dr Tulika Chandra from the transfusion medicine department.“More than 50 staff of the surgical gastroenterology department toiled for five days to make this mammoth exercise successful and that too within resources constraints,” said Prof Chandra. Liver transplants are a complex procedure and are performed in only select hospitals of the country.“This is the beginning of a new chapter.
