LUCKNOW: It’s nearing a fortnight since the infamous ‘joota kaand’ (BJP law makers hitting each other with shoes), but the BJP brass has not dared to initiate disciplinary action. The ugly incident is haunting the party high command as it brainstorms on the caste math for ticket distribution. On March 6, BJP MP from Khalilabad Sharad Tripathi and local MLA Rajesh Singh Baghel beat each other with shoes at a district planning committee meet in Sant Kabir Nagar. For example, when BJP vice-president Daya Shankar Singh uttered unsavoury remarks against BSP chief Mayawati before the 2017 assembly elections, despite having apologised, he was suspended from the post in an hour and within 24 hours dismissed from the party and then disallowed from contesting elections. In a way, Daya Shankar was punished thrice for one crime.Baghel’s brother is also under investigation by CBI and ED for his alleged role in largescale irregularities in construction of Gomti river front and his house in Lucknow was also raided by the two investigating agencies. The video went viral and was watched world-over, causing huge embarrassment to BJP, which claims to be a party with difference. Both chief minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP state president Mahendra Nath Pandey described the incident as unfortunate and assured strict action the same day.State BJP leaders are camping in Delhi and the party brass is involved in stormy sessions headed by PM Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah to finalise names of candidates with nominations for first phase beginning on Monday. The party is in a quandary on how to deal with Sharad Tripathi, who had been blessed by the PM himself and is seen as a protege of Union home minister Rajnath Singh.Another factor delaying action, including denial of ticket to him is the widening rift between Brahmins and Rajputs in eastern UP, where traditional rivalry between the two dominant castes is an established fact.Contrary to this, there are a number of incidents when the party leadership took swift action against those who violated discipline.
