The University Grants Commission had also given a go-ahead to institutes to increase seats for accommodating the 10% quota. National PG College principal Nirja Singh said, “In the admission forms, we have added EWS under options but the quota will be implemented after receiving directions from the university. However, state universities and colleges can increase the number of seats to accommodate 10% quota only after receiving specific orders from the state government. On its part, LU has provided a column for EWS reservation in the admission forms. A candidate will have to tick in this column to avail of the quota. In the absence of guidelines from the government, the number has not been revised.

LUCKNOW: The admission process at Lucknow University and its associated colleges has begun, but in the absence of government guidelines, institutions are in a fix regarding how many seats will have to be increased for implementation of the 10% economically weaker section ( EWS ) quota. After the central government issued orders for EWS quota in January, the Union human resource development ministry had recommended higher educational institutions to increase 25% seats to compensate for the number of seats lost in unreserved categories after implementation of the quota. The University Grants Commission had also given a go-ahead to institutes to increase seats for accommodating the 10% quota. However, state universities and colleges can increase the number of seats to accommodate 10% quota only after receiving specific orders from the state government. On its part, LU has provided a column for EWS reservation in the admission forms. A candidate will have to tick in this column to avail of the quota. However, since EWS certificates are not being issued by the district administration as of now, candidates will have to produce documents certifying their claim at a later stage.Meanwhile, the number of seats mentioned in the admission brochure are the same as last year. In the absence of guidelines from the government, the number has not been revised. This has led to confusion among candidates who have flooded LU offices with queries on whether the reservation will be implemented on the existing number of seats or on increased one.LU vice-chancellor SP Singh said LU has adopted 10% EWS reservation in principle and made provision in the admission form but the number of seats will be revised after government issues instructions. The state of indecision in LU has also left colleges affiliated to it in a fix. National PG College principal Nirja Singh said, “In the admission forms, we have added EWS under options but the quota will be implemented after receiving directions from the university. Colleges don’t have the authority to increase seats on their own.”At Jai Narain PG College, principal SD Sharma said, “If the number of seats is to be increased, it would be done only on government order.”Principal of Vidyant PG College Dharm Kaur said he was waiting for LU’s directions to finalise the EWS quota policy.Additional chief secretary in the higher education department Rajendra Kumar Tiwari said, “The government order for implementation of EWS quota in higher education will be issued shortly.”
