LUCKNOW: State government’s School Har Din Aayein (SHARDA) scheme hit an unexpected roadblock, after district basic education officers (DBEOs) misinterpreted the directions for a survey and wrongly also included 59,000 children of up to five years of age as school drop outs across the state Under SHARDA initiative, DBEOs were asked to identify the number of children who have not attended school for 45 days in one go or had never been to school.The DBEOs had to identify children between five and 14 years of age, and then enroll them in schools in the academic session 2019-20. However, the education officials collecting details for the survey wrongly included 59,417 children below the age of five years in their data. These children comprise 65% of the total number of beneficiaries under SHARDA initiative and are yet to attain the minimum age of enrollment in government schools.The process of collecting data for the survey had started in January and was to end by March.Till March 24, DBEOs had identified 90,888 children, including 43,083 girls. Officials said that the surveyors had misinterpreted the directions issued by the department. They had wrongly included 59,417 children, below five years of age, as drop outs.Basic education department officials said that the data of children from six to 14 years of age is correct.Director of basic education department, Sarvendra Vikram Bahadur Singh , said, “The DBEOs misinterpreted the directions issued in January and collected the wrong data. They have been instructed to collect the details again for identifying the children above six years of age.”In a letter to DBEOs, joint education director (basic) Ganesh Kumar, said, “Some kids under five years of age have been wrongly included.
