Nine held for Bollywoodstyle escape of gangster

MEERUT: Nine suspects, including six policemen, were arrested by Meerut police in the escape of gangster Badan Singh Baddo from a city hotel on Thursday evening. According to a source, Baddo was brought to a hotel where the gangster is said to owns stakes as well. The hotel is now run by his long-time associate and business partner who is also under scanner for his alleged role in the escape. His passport, which was issued from Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, was cancelled after he was convicted in one of the cases,” Meerut SSP Nitin Tiwari said.Reacting to speculation that the gangster may have fled the country, STF sleuths claimed that immigration department was immediately alerted about it.Senior officials in the police department claim that the incident was a “well though-out plan in connivance with the police officials”. Baddo, serving life sentence in Fatehgarh Central Jail, had escaped after he was brought to Meerut soon after his hearing at a Ghaziabad court on Thursday morning.All the six cops, including an inspector, have been booked under relevant sections of “intentional omission to apprehend” and “criminal conspiracy”, police said.Known for his suave and flamboyant lifestyle, Baddo, 48, has more than 30 cases of murder, loot, robbery and extortion lodged against him at various police stations in Meerut and adjoining districts.

Baddo was sentenced to life on October 31, 2017 for the murder of Ravinder Singh, a lawyer, in 1996.A diehard fan of Al Pacino, the gangster is said to have adopted over the years the mannerism and gait of Michael Corleone, The Godfather protagonist played by Pacino in the iconic film.Known for his bespoke tuxedos, designer shades, Swiss watches and luxury vehicles, the gangster owns a palatial house in Meerut and is known for staying in costly suits in five-star hotels.Baddo is said to own businesses in Australia where his estranged wife and daughters are already settled.“A lookout notice has also been issued and the local police is working closely with other agencies like STF to trace Baddo.
