LUCKNOW: Despite some people questioning the efficacy of vaccines, some conclusions indicate that vaccinated persons who tested Covid positive responded better to the treatment and were saved from hospitalisation. The conclusions are a part of an assessment of one lakh Covid-19 positive patients commissioned by the state health department though the final outcomes are yet to be released. The retrospective study noted that 6,500 persons had taken at least one dose of the vaccine.

“The assessment commissioned by the UP government showed that over 95% of the vaccinated positives showed zero to mild symptoms, while another 3.5% had to go to level-1 health care facility (which is needed when there is no facility to isolate the patient at home),” sources said, adding that the final outcomes are expected in a week or so.

EXPERTS ENDORSE

The indications are endorsed by experts. SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman and his wife are a case in point. The two had tested positive to the pandemic infection despite taking both the doses. “Being doctors we are constantly at the risk of contracting the infection. However, the vaccines saved us from problems that pose a threat to life. In fact, very mild symptoms appeared in us and were resolved in a week. There is no doubt over vaccines and we are proof of it,” he said urging people to shun their fears and get the jab without wasting time.

Chief medical superintendent, Era’s Lucknow Medical College and Hospital Dr PS Singh said: “We noted that the severity of the disease among those vaccinated even once was lesser than the other patients. We believe that vaccination could have laid an impact on the replication of the viruses. This saved patients from severe forms of problems like cytokine storms and inflammation.”

EXCEPTIONS MAY EXIST

Despite the visible benefits of the vaccine, there are cases in which some persons died because of the coronavirus infection. Experts said that exceptions can exist. Citing international data, experts at the Union health ministry said: “Both the vaccines being used in India have indicated an 80% efficacy. Covid deaths despite vaccine coverage can be linked to a number of factors like age of the patient, presence of pre-existing comorbidities and time of intervention. In addition to this, a patient`s individual response to medicines and therapies also play a role in matters of life and death.”
