VARANASI: PM Narendra Modi on Saturday gave credit to the women of the country for the passage of the womens reservation bill in Parliament and said the power of their leadership has been proven in every era of history. He also took a swipe at the Opposition saying that some people have a problem with the word Vandan (worship) in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.Addressing an all women public meeting at the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University here, he said the bill was pending for three decades. "It is your strength that even parties which earlier opposed had to come in its support. Today all the parties are afraid of you, that is why this bill was passed," he said. The power of my mothers and sisters and their blessings are my biggest protective shield, he said at the rally where women showered flower petals on him for Parliaments approval of the bill. Striking a chord with the voters of Varanasi, he said "your MP from Kashi got the privilege" of getting womens quota bill passed in Parliament. "Kashi is the holy city of Mother Kushmanda, Mother Shringar Gauri, Mother Annapurna and Mother Ganga. Glory of their power is attached to every part of this place. Vindhyavasini Devi is also not far from here," he said.Nari Shakti Vandan Act is a law with a broad vision. We have to create such a society in which women do not need anyones support to move forward, said the PM, adding, After the bill was passed in Parliament, first of all I have come to Kashi to seek your blessings. He said the Nari Shakti Vandan Act has increased the excitement of the Navratri festival. This law will open new paths for womens development and empowerment, and their presence in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies will increase, he added. The PM further said that the womens leadership may be a modern system for the rest of the world but we are the people who worship Mother Parvati and Mother Ganga before Lord Shiva. From Rani Lakshmi Bai in the freedom struggle to the women scientists who led the Chandrayaan mission, they have shown women power, he said. Some people have a problem with the word Vandan (worship) in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. They do not understand what the meaning of womens respect is. Now, what will they do if they do not worship mothers? We have to focus on our goal. The country will continue to make big decisions, he said. While speaking on the bill in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan had objected to its name and said equality is a constitutional right of women and it is not appropriate to link it with divine or worship. For the past nine years, we have worked keeping the dreams of women at the centre. The women beneficiaries of various schemes were emotional while talking to me. In Banaras, more than 2.3 lakh women have got the benefit of Ujjwala Yojana. In the BJP government, more than 75,000 houses were given under PM Awas Yojana, in which most of the houses are in the name of women, he said.
