LUCKNOW: The first dengue death of the year was reported at a private medical institute on Kanpur Road on Friday. The health department confirmed dengue as the cause of death following an audit on Sunday.Institute records indicated that the patient was a 30-year-old resident of the Sarojininagar area who had been suffering from high-grade fever and retro-orbital pain for five days. Yogesh Raghuvanshi, spokesperson of the office of the chief medical officer of Lucknow, said, "The patient was suffering from hepatitis B, chronic liver disease, typhoid with septicemia and was admitted to two private hospitals before coming to the institute. He succumbed to dengue shock syndrome (DSS)." Health officials said that in DSS, the body suffers from severe plasma leakage, severe bleeding and organ damage that manifests in elevated liver enzymes. This, in this case, impaired sensorium and resulted in his death.Following the death, Chief Medical Officer Dr Manoj Agrawal directed the district malaria officer (DMO) and additional medical officer to undertake intensive measures such as fogging and sprinkling pesticides to check mosquito menace in the Sarojininagar area.Meanwhile, the city recorded 28 dengue cases, taking the count to nearly 800 since January. Of these cases, the highest four were reported from Indiranagar Community Healthcare Centre (CHC), followed by four from NK Road and three cases each were recorded from Turiyaganj, Silver Jubilee and Chinhat CHCs. The rest of the patients were from Sarojininagar (2), Aliganj (2), Aishbagh (1) and other CHCs.Besides, 336 homes have also been surveyed for mosquito breeding conditions in different areas of the city and notices have been issued to two homeowners because mosquito breeding conditions were found in their house, said Yogesh.
