‘Man-eater of Bahraich’ caught using infrared drones

Lucknow: After a four-month pursuit involving infrared drones, multiple teams, cameras and nets, a forest department team on Sunday successfully captured a leopard allegedly responsible for the deaths of five persons and injuries to a dozen others in Bahraich district.The leopard, a healthy 10-month-old male, has been trappedin a cage in Loniyanpurwa village, located on the border of Motipur range of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) and the Nanpara range of the Bahraich forest division.The teams spotted the feline using infrared drones, said divisional forest officer, Bahraich, Akashdeep Badhawan.He said the teams used to wait for 18 hours a day in search of the feline and IR-based drones were used by another team to trace the pugmarks and the predators movements. We spotted the pugmarks using the drones and then trailed it using traditional methods, he said.Elephants from KWS were deployed to comb the area, and cages were installed at strategic locations.Veterinary expert Daya Shankar from Dudhwa Tiger Reserve examined the leopard and said it was a healthy male.Forest officials are currently working on the necessary formalities and arrangements to transport the leopard to Lucknow Zoo or some other suitable location.Forest officials added that the trap team and drones are keeping an eye in the area as one more leopard and her two cubs are on the prowl.We also published the following articles recentlyIn Bahraich, forest dept to use jumbo poo to repel leopardsIn response to deadly leopard attacks in Bahraich, the forest department is using elephant dung to deter the predators.
