LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party may have failed to open its account in Madhya Pradesh assembly election, statistics reveal that it did deprive the Congress of adding double-digit number to its tally had the two parties joined hands to contest the elections.Party leaders claimed it was the arrogance of Congresss state leadership that cost the grand old party dear.Senior leaders in the party conceded that the vote share of the party has gone down in MP as compared to 2018 and the performance of the candidates fell short of expectations.According to the poll result data available with the Election Commission by Sunday evening, SP had bagged the vote share of 0.45% (expected to increase slightly once final results are tabulated) as compared to that of 1.3% in 2018. In the previous elections, the party had bagged one seat but failed to open its account this time around."It is time to look forward now. We will continue to strengthen our party in MP. For SP, the focus has now shifted to 2024 Lok Sabha polls," partys national secretary Rajendra Chaudhary told TOI."Our prime objective now is to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The party will stand by its commitment as a member of INDIA bloc and do everything to challenge the BJP in UP," said the former cabinet minister.Summing up the performance in MP assembly polls, the SP leaders said apart from other factors, the party was unable to organize its election campaign due to paucity of time primarily because the Congress kept SP in the dark."The Congress was all over the place in the elections. First, it was unclear about entering into an alliance with SP," a senior leader said.Referring to Congresss CM face Kamal Naths Akhilesh-Wakhilesh jibe, he said the backward class voter saw it as disrespectful."The BJP cashed on it and Jyotiraditya Scindia issued a statement saying that the Congress party was disrespectful towards a senior leader like our party president," he said. While the campaigning was at its peak, the Congress tried to tow the soft Hindutva line by claiming that it was the grand old party which got the locks of Babri mosque opened to claim credit for Ram Temple in Ayodhya."Then the state Congress leadership went all out to visit babas. In sharp contrast, BJPs campaign was organised and focused. No one can help the Congress if it does not want to help itself," the leader said."Results so far reveal that in seats like Chandia, Gunar, Gurh, Jatara, Newari, Rajnagar and others, SP got votes much more than the margin with which the Congress candidate on the seat lost to the BJP candidate," another senior leader said."But the Congress itself chose not to enter into an alliance with the SP. It was sheer arrogance of the state leadership to blame the SP for Congresss defeat in MP," he added. The Congress and SP were involved in a bitter exchange all through the election campaign in MP after the grand old party walked out of an alliance with the SP unannounced 90 days before the polling. As if to prove a point, the SP then fielded 60 candidates as Akhilesh along with Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav and party national general secretary Shivpal Yadav campaigned extensively together addressing over 30 public meetings and roadshows in the state.
