Najeeb's issue should be UP's question: Mother to take out Insaaf March in Lucknow

  • | Saturday | 11th February, 2017

It is now time that the issue of students, their safety and universities be made the election issue by a party in UP. But the fight is not just for Najeeb but for all marginalized sections of the society whose face is Najeeb." I have met each and every politician from Delhi to even UP's chief minister, but none are bringing me to justice. "Infact Najeeb and his relative's home in Badaun was raided by the UP police on January 28. "What was the fault of my son that he was beaten up inhumanly and forced into disappearance.

LUCKNOW: On Saturday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Badaun, Fatima Nafees, mother of Najeeb Ahmed , MSc Biotechnology student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who went missing from campus on October 15, 2016, gave a call for a students' peaceful march in Lucknow for Sunday, after four months of persistent fighting to bring back her son.Nafees and her family are natives of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh (UP) that goes to poll on February 15 and thus believe that Najeeb's issue be UP's question. Not lending support to any political party, Nafees cleared that the protest was to bring to notice Najeeb's 'involuntary disappearance' and raise the issue of student safety in the country. "I just want my son back, safe and sound," she said.Talking to reporters in the city on Saturday, flanked by JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) president Mohit Pandey, former JNUSU vice-president Shehla Rashid, Student Islamic Organisation (SIO) national secretary Azharuddin, her younger son Mujeeb and family friend Nadim Khan, Nafees talked of her plight, broke down while speaking, and wailed as she raised questions on the eve of UP's high-voltage election."What was the fault of my son that he was beaten up inhumanly and forced into disappearance. I have not been able to find him yet. I have met each and every politician from Delhi to even UP's chief minister, but none are bringing me to justice. I don't want action against anyone, I just want my son back who is only paying the price for having chosen higher education for himself," said Nafees, between her incessant crying. The call for a peaceful march by her on Sunday from Parivartan Chowk to Gandhi statue at 1 pm, will also be attended by former president of JNUSU Kanhaiya Kumar and students and office bearers of the Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) including its president Faizul Hasan and secretary Nabeel Usmani. Similar marches will be taken out on Sunday in Jamshedpur, Jabalpur, Hyderabad and two in Kerala.Nafees and the group who had led a peaceful protest march in her hometown Badaun on February 8 said that while an FIR was filed against 150 persons including her,Mohit Pandey and Nahas Mala (SIO national president), there was complete inaction against the alleged culprits belonging to ABVP- the student wing of BJP and RSS since the incident. "Infact Najeeb and his relative's home in Badaun was raided by the UP police on January 28. Since day one the family has been undergoing harassment for complaining about the assault by ABVP on Najeeb in JNU on October 15," said Pandey.Talking to reporters, Shehla Rashid, said, "Only last night, a Kashmiri student in JNU was assaulted again, only because none of the culprits in Najeeb's case have been punished. It is now time that the issue of students, their safety and universities be made the election issue by a party in UP."Rejecting that the protest is not timed with the election, Pandey said, "Elections are a coincidence, since our fight began right from the minute the incident took place and will continue even after elections. But the fight is not just for Najeeb but for all marginalized sections of the society whose face is Najeeb." he also said that the matter is not to polarize the state into Hindus and Muslims since it only divides people into sides of justice and injustice.
