79% parents in Uttar Pradesh want cap on private schools’ fee hike: Survey

In Delhi, 69% parents want fee hike percentage to be regulated, while in Maharashtra, 56% parents felt a capping on increase in fee hike is required. Nationally, 64% parents want cap on school fee hike that takes place every year. He added, UP is worst hit as majority of the parents want a cap on the hike in school fees. Close to 31% parents said they wanted a cap on the annual fee increase percentage while 21% felt that there should be a cap on school fee amount charged by private schools. The survey covered parents from CBSE, ICSE and state board schools across the state.In fact, the percentage of parents wanting a cap on fee hike is highest in UP, after West Bengal where 83% parents said they felt immediate capping on fee hike in private schools.

LUCKNOW: At a time when the state government is cracking down on excessive fee levied on students in private schools, a survey has revealed that 79% parents in Uttar Pradesh wants a cap on the increase in fee. The survey conducted by LocalCircles , a community social media platform, reveals that nearly 47% parents want the annual fee increase percentage linked to inflation. Nationally, 64% parents want cap on school fee hike that takes place every year. The survey was conducted in 14 states covering 9,200 parents.In UP, the survey covered 3,830 parents who said they felt the school fees has been rising at much higher rates than average earnings. Close to 31% parents said they wanted a cap on the annual fee increase percentage while 21% felt that there should be a cap on school fee amount charged by private schools. The survey covered parents from CBSE, ICSE and state board schools across the state.In fact, the percentage of parents wanting a cap on fee hike is highest in UP, after West Bengal where 83% parents said they felt immediate capping on fee hike in private schools. The figures for Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat are 53%, 71%, 69%, 31% and 33% respectively.Post the UP government's decision to bring an ordinance to regulate fees in private schools, parents are somewhat relieved but waiting for an action. ``Schools off late have started charging admission fees every year which is completely irrational. Does a student need to admitted in every class he/she is promoted to? And the increase in annual fees every year is so high that it is becoming unbearable for parents,'' lamented Nupur Mehrotra, a parent.A spokesperson from LocalCircles said, "Every parent wants their children to study in a private school and get a good education. But better private education comes a higher cost and in many cases as parents across the country report, fee increases in the range of 10-40% every year.'' He added, UP is worst hit as majority of the parents want a cap on the hike in school fees. Parents, who are seeing salaries/earnings increase of 5-10% are feeling the squeeze as the increase in school fee is much higher.The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had made it mandatory for schools to disclose their fee structures from last year.
