UP Police drive to rehabilitate homeless mentally unstable

"I would like to expand this campaign across the state and with intervention of the government, build more protection homes for them," said the DGP. Lucknow: State police would soon begin a campaign to rehabilitate mentally challenged persons abandoned by their families and rendered homeless.Assisted by NGOs in the effort, UP Police would then arrange for their stay in shelter homes or treatment in government hospitals.Speaking to TOI, DGP Sulkhan Singh said that instances had been reported where mentally disabled were found on the streets. In some cases, they had even attacked commuters or posed problems for the public.Such persons would be identified and taken to hospitals and treated for rehabilitation in their families and society, he added.Singh recalled that a few years ago, he had started this campaign in Lucknow but due to his outstation postings, he had been unable to pursue it.During that campaign, Singh said, he had treated more than 100 mentally disabled people who had been abandoned by society and were found on the streets of Lucknow.
