Indian Industries Association demands revival of food parks in Gorakhpur

LUCKNOW: The apex association of micros small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) - IIA (Indian Industries Association) has sought Uttar Pradesh government's help to revive the food park project which was proposed in Shahajanwa of Gorakhpur in 2004. "The establishment of food processing industries in Gorakhpur will not only produce job opportunities for locals but also help in economic growth of farmers of UP east", said IIA. GIDA had earmarked 25 acres of land for this Food Park at that time. But after this, GIDA was unable to complete its obligations and as a result the Centre asked for the refund of grant-in-aid in 2011. A grant-in-aid of Rs 323.11 lakh was also approved by ministry of food processing industries under the scheme of 'Infrastructure Development' and first installment of Rs 80.77 lakhs was also released in July 2007.At the state government level, this food park was to be implemented by GIDA (Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority).

The association has sent a letter to the UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath and marked it to the UP minister of industrial development and principal secretary of industrial development in state government to seek their attention in reviving the unit In 2004, the Union ministry of food processing industries had approved setting up of Food Parks in Gorakhpur under the Food Park scheme due to constant efforts of the then Gorakhpur MP and now chief minister of the state- Yogi Adityanath. A grant-in-aid of Rs 323.11 lakh was also approved by ministry of food processing industries under the scheme of 'Infrastructure Development' and first installment of Rs 80.77 lakhs was also released in July 2007.At the state government level, this food park was to be implemented by GIDA (Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority). IIA said that, Keeping in view the abundant agricultural produce in Gorakhpur and adjoining of East UP and scope for setting up viable food processing industries in the region, we have demanded for revival of Gorakhpur Food Park project under the present 'Mega Food Park' scheme of Union Government.The association also pointed out that across the country, total 34 mega food parks are approved but despite Uttar Pradesh being the largest state in country and also having agriculture as its main occupation, it doesn't have approval for a single food park which is disappointing. "The establishment of food processing industries in Gorakhpur will not only produce job opportunities for locals but also help in economic growth of farmers of UP east", said IIA.
