LUDHIANA: The city police and highway patrol authority have not learnt any lessons from accidents caused by stationary vehicles. Stationary vehicles are dangerous on highways, where vehicles are driving at 80kmph on an average. Moreover, it is the duty of the patrolling team to off road the vehicles parked on highways. As per rules, there should be a highway patrol with ambulance, recovery van and a hydraulic cutter at every 50 km. When Sukhchain Singh Gill took over as the commissioner of police, he too stressed that the directive be followed strictly. After the order, several people were booked initially.

LUDHIANA: The city police and highway patrol authority have not learnt any lessons from accidents caused by stationary vehicles. The local cops have failed to enforce orders of the police commissioner to book the occupants of wrongly parked vehicles and highway patrol authority is also not prompt. On Sunday morning, a driver and his helper were killed after their truck rammed into an unidentified vehicle parked on National Highway 1, near Khanna. On December 1 last year, a 58-year-old woman and her son were killed, while his friend was severely injured, after their SUV crashed into a stationary truck near the octroi post on NH-1 in Doraha. After the December incident, the then top cop RN Dhoke had ordered the police to book drivers of stationary vehicles under Section 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) of the IPC. Dhoke had stated that such vehicles caused fatal accidents and asked all SHOs and traffic police officials to keep a check on them. When Sukhchain Singh Gill took over as the commissioner of police, he too stressed that the directive be followed strictly. After the order, several people were booked initially. But now the police have again become lax and several vehicles can be seen parked on the highway.Road safety expert Kamaljit Soi said, “This is gross negligence on the part of the enforcement agencies. Stationary vehicles are dangerous on highways, where vehicles are driving at 80kmph on an average. As per rules, there should be a highway patrol with ambulance, recovery van and a hydraulic cutter at every 50 km. Moreover, it is the duty of the patrolling team to off road the vehicles parked on highways. But the authority seems to be sleeping over the violation.”Commissioner of police Sukhchain Singh Gill said, “The police will act against those who park vehicles on roads.”The route and corridor manager of highway authority could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
