Sangrur health authorities unearth illegal de-addiction centre

Sangrur: The district health authorities from Sangrur unearthed an illegal drug de-addiction centre that was being run from a building on Sohna Road and rescued 30 inmates, who were allegedly being kept in illegal detention.According to civil surgeon Dr Manjit Singh, they had received a complaint on Friday morning regarding the illegal drug de-addiction centre being operated in the district. As the health team could not find anybody inside the building, they tried speaking to the neighbours.Soon the health team spotted another house right adjacent to the said building, which was found to be locked from outside. He said, soon after they constituted a special team of health officials, who raided the building late friday evening.As the team descended on the building, they found it to be empty with large hoardings displaying the name of Ekta Foundation. As they broke the locks, they discovered 30 drug addicts inside.The civil surgeon said when the health team interacted with the inmates, they told them that they were treated inhumanely at the de-addiction centre and were often beaten up.Later, the health officials scrutinized the records and found that it was an illegal drug de-addiction centre, which was being run without any valid documents.Dr Manjeet Singh said they had written to the district police for initiating legal action against the owners of this de-addiction centre for various irregularities committed by them.
