LUDHIANA: The campaign to save Sidhwan Canal continues to see work on the ground. On Friday morning, various NGOs — along with a councillor — carried out a plantation drive near Pakhowal Road bridge. The management of Shree Geeta Mandir has already put up a board on Pakhowal Road bridge to stop litterbugs from throwing garbage into the canal.“Members of various NGOs, area residents, councillor Mamta Ashu, and a team from the Forest and Irrigation department, fully supported by Municipal Corporation officials, carried out this plantation drive. As part of the plantation drive, we planted 120 saplings of Amaltas, Gulmohar, and Peepal on a one-kilometre stretch from Pakhowal Road towards BRS Nagar railway line. The plantation on the remaining half will be completed in the coming time,” said Pardeep Dhall, general secretary of Shree Geeta Mandir. He added: “More than 200 people —including mayor Balkar Singh and four councillors — came for the drive, despite heavy rain. We are thankful to The Times of India for the Clean Sidhwan campaign, as it brought focus on the bad shape of an important asset of Ludhiana.”Mamta Ashu said: “Not only are saplings being planted, but to ensure they receive the best care and survive, we have requested every participant of the plantation drive to adopt one sapling each. Apart from saplings, shrubs will also be planted in the coming time.” The councillor said it was great to see such enthusiasm among residents for the plantation activity, as people had gathered despite such heavy rain.Participants of the plantation drive said they felt honoured to be a part of the campaign for a Clean and Green Sidhwan Canal. “As a Ludhiana resident, I always felt bad to see the plight of Sidhwan Canal, which is the jugular vein and only water body passing through the city’s heart. It is a dream to see a Clean and Green Sidhwan, and efforts by the councillor and her team are worth appreciating. I also believe more people will come forward for the pious cause after an increase in awareness levels among them,” said Narinder Singh, a social worker. The mayor said: “Apart from the plantation drive, the focus should be on providing the best care to saplings, so that they grow into healthy plants.” He requested members of Shree Geeta Mandir to try to visit the plantation site every day for the purpose, and to ensure saplings are protected and receive adequate water. The mayor also met divisional forest officer (DFO) Charanjit Singh and asked him to get a barbed wire near the plantation site, so that no one can enter the area and damage the newly planted saplings.
