Thapar student’s body fished out of Bhakra canal

An autopsy was conducted and the body handed over to family members. Family members said they had spoken to Sumeet on Sunday and Monday morning as well.Investigating officer Rajesh Kumar said, “The postmortem has been conducted and the reports are awaited. It is part of investigation how she had gone 3 km away from the university to the canal near on the outskirts of the city on Patiala-Nabha road,” Kumar said. The body was witnessed floating in the canal around 7.30 am. Shankar Bhardwaj, one of the divers, said, “The family was informed about the body as we got the number from her identity card.

PATIALA: The body of a 22-year-old student of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology was fished out of Bhakhra canal near Century Enclave in Patiala on Monday.Sumeet Kaur, who had completed her BTech final year course, hailed from Swara village of Kharar division in Mohali district. Police said the woman’s father is a farmer. The body was witnessed floating in the canal around 7.30 am. Divers found an identity card in her pocket. Shankar Bhardwaj, one of the divers, said, “The family was informed about the body as we got the number from her identity card. Family members claimed their daughter was planning to return home by Monday.”Police, on other hand, recovered a laptop and a mobile phone from her room in the hostel. An autopsy was conducted and the body handed over to family members. No suicide note has been recovered. Family members said they had spoken to Sumeet on Sunday and Monday morning as well.Investigating officer Rajesh Kumar said, “The postmortem has been conducted and the reports are awaited. We have made inquiries from the family as well as the authorities of Thapar institute, but are yet to get any clues. The family was in touch with the girl since Sunday night. We will obtain her phone call details. It is part of investigation how she had gone 3 km away from the university to the canal near on the outskirts of the city on Patiala-Nabha road,” Kumar said. The university authorities refused to make any comment about the incident.
