'Girl found dead in canal may have killed herself'

She was fished out at 7.30am from the canal after some divers witnessed a body floating in the canal. The girl had scored poorly and may have committed suicide due to stress. "We have scrutinized footages from the CCTV cameras of the Institute, which revealed that the girl walked out of the college. According to DSP Sourav Jindal, the girl was seen coming out of the engineering institute at 5.55am. We did not conduct any medical examination of the girl," the cops said.

PATIALA: Police here are yet to ascertain the reason behind the death of a 22-year-old girl - a student of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology - who was fished out of Bhakhra canal on Monday morning. Meanwhile, the cops have said that it was possible that the deceased committed suicide as she failed to fetch a job for herself at campus placements.Identified as Sumeet Kaur, the deceased was a B.Tech final year student. Her results for the last semester were awaited. "Her last call location was traced near Century Enclave point of Bhakhra canal on Patiala-Nabha road," the cops said.The police said they have found a laptop and books from the room of a deceased. According to DSP Sourav Jindal, the girl was seen coming out of the engineering institute at 5.55am. She was fished out at 7.30am from the canal after some divers witnessed a body floating in the canal."Post-mortem of the deceased was conducted, and the reports suggested she had died of drowning. We did not conduct any medical examination of the girl," the cops said."We have scrutinized footages from the CCTV cameras of the Institute, which revealed that the girl walked out of the college. We are looking into the call detail report (CDR) of girl's phone number as that would help us in the investigation."A roommate of the deceased belongs to Jammu and Kashmir and her phone is also not reachable. We are hopeful, the roommate of the deceased could reveal a lot of things," said DSP Sourav Jindal.The deceased had scored only 50% marks in her overall results while the final results were yet to be out. At the time when her friends got placed in different companies that came to the campus for recruitment, she failed to fetch a job.Harinder Singh, father of the deceased said it did not seem she was under any stress when she had last talked to him. "My daughter sounded fine when I spoke to her on the phone. She said that she would return soon. She was my only child," said the father of the deceased."A lot of our students got hired by companies which came to our campus. The girl had scored poorly and may have committed suicide due to stress. More academic details can only be provided by registrar Gurbinder Singh," said dean welfare students Manik Kumar.
