LUDHIANA: The wet spell is likely to continue.As rain lashed the city for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, the weathermen said more showers were on the cards.The city received 16 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours: 14 mm between 8.30pm on Tuesday and 8.30am on Wednesday and 2mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Wednesday. The downpour did not affect the temperature much, with the maximum being recorded at 34.2 degrees C (a degree more than normal) and the minimum at 27.5 degrees (two degrees more than normal). The relative humidity was normal at 80%.“Light rain will drench Ludhiana in the next couple of days. Around July 21, the city will receive moderate rainfall between 20mm and 40mm. The showers will bring the temperatures down,” said Chandigarh meteorological department director Surender Paul.The department website predicts mercury taking a plunge, with the maximum temperature likely to drop to 32 degrees till July 21 and the minimum to 26 degrees till July 22.Rakesh Agarwal, a trader of Civil Lines , said, “The rain brought temporary relief. It neither brought the temperature down, nor humidity.”With rain leading to waterlogging, many fear spread of mosquito-borne diseases.Suresh Kumar, a resident of Haibowal, said, “Stagnant water will become breeding ground for mosquitoes and lead to dengue and malaria . The municipal corporation should now ensure fogging in the entire city.”
