Punjab Agricultural University bans students driving cars within campus

LUDHIANA: In view of incidents involving rash driving by students, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has decided to ban students from bringing four-wheelers into the campus. The students making use of parkings (near gate number 1 and 2) will be charged a fee of Rs1,000 per month. However, the students are allowed to bring four-wheelers only up to Gate number 1 and 2, and they will park their vehicles in parking near Gate number 1 and 2 . The ban on vehicles has been implemented in Punjabi University and Thapar University at (both in Patiala ). We have also made alternate arrangements for students,” added Singh.Even wards of employees will not be allowed to bring four-wheelers into the campus.

LUDHIANA: In view of incidents involving rash driving by students, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has decided to ban students from bringing four-wheelers into the campus. The move comes in the wake of some accidents due to speeding over the past one year. A notice was circulated in all departments stating that no student would be allowed to bring four-wheelers from Monday, though the upcoming semester will commence from July 27.“The use of four-wheelers by students, including hostelers, on the campus is strictly prohibited. However, the students are allowed to bring four-wheelers only up to Gate number 1 and 2, and they will park their vehicles in parking near Gate number 1 and 2 . The students making use of parkings (near gate number 1 and 2) will be charged a fee of Rs1,000 per month. The students will deposit the fee in their respective colleges, along with the semester fee,” stated the notice, sent to all deans of colleges.Vice-chancellor Baldev Singh Dhillon said: “The movement of vehicles has increased a lot within the university campus, which leads to a lot of disturbance. The ban on vehicles has been implemented in Punjabi University and Thapar University at (both in Patiala ). We have also made alternate arrangements for students,” added Singh.Even wards of employees will not be allowed to bring four-wheelers into the campus. However, for wards of employees residing on the campus, entry will be allowed only through gate No.2 and 4, if they are using four- wheelers. The circular also states that a fine of Rs500 per violation will be imposed on the student who brings four-wheelers beyond the parking located at Gate number 1 and 2.While security officials did not restrict any cars on Monday as they were unaware about the notice, authorities said this would be implemented with immediate effect, and outsiders and visitors coming to the university will have to park their vehicles in the designated parking spaces.2 BUSES STARTEDFor the convenience of students, staff and visitors to the university campus, two buses have been started on a trial basis from Gate number 1 and 2 from Monday. The timings and routes of buses and designated stops can be changed according to demand.Estate Officer VS Hans said: “Rash driving incidents were increasing day by day, and recently, a student rammed a car into a wall. The safety of students and residents is top priority. We have provided an alternate service, where they will be dropped to the farthest location, that is Biotechnology department. Gradually, the bus will be available for whole day operation for the convenience of students. Even the timings can be changed, depending on feedback from students. Students can also make use of two-wheelers and cycles to commute within the campus. And for outsiders, we can issue a pass, depending upon the situation. We will also start e-rickshaws in the campus very soon, which will also ease the situation.”
