Ludhiana: The triple murder of a woman and her two grandchildren was well planned over a period of time by her cousin who had lived with her family for about two years. Five days after the brutal murders, the family found sharp-edged weapons, like screw drivers, sickle, scissors, boxes of blades, hammers, tape and chilli powder hidden by the accused in every room of the house.Rajwinder Singh, 43, had purchased the stuff by borrowing money from the family as he was jobless. The family alleged that Rajwinder wanted to kill all of them as while fleeing he had turned the stove knobs on, but fortunately the deceased woman had turned the regulator off.Rajwinder hammered his cousin Gurwinder Kaur, 52, her granddaughter Mandeep Kaur, 8, and grandson Heetak, 6, to death on August 3. Even after five days, the police have found no clue of the accused. On Wednesday, the family conducted the bhog ceremony of the deceased.Speaking with the TOI, Sukhwinder Kaur, daughter of Gurwinder and mother of Mandeep, said, “We have a business of mattresses, so our house stored those in large numbers. On Wednesday, when we were cleaning the house, we found a bag containing two screw drivers, a sickle, an insecticide spray and packet of chilli powder from the store room. Besides, boxes of blades, scissors and knifes were found hidden in all rooms. It seems Rajwinder had planned to kill all of us on the first opportunity.”Tajinder Kaur, mother of Heetak said, “My father called me up that day when he found the house locked. I, along with my sister, Sukhwinder, reached the house and we broke open the main door. We went upstairs with a thought that my mother and kids must have gone somewhere. My father asked me to make tea for which I came downstairs and noticed bloodstains. Then we found knobs of the stove on. Luckily, my mother had turned off the regulator, as she always does while cleaning the kitchen. Rajwinder had planned to kill us all.”After living with the family for two years, Rajwinder moved to a rented accommodation five months ago. “He belongs to Ludhiana. After marrying an Amritsar-based woman, he started living in the Holy City. Later, they got separated and Rajwinder started living at different places on rent,” said a cop.“My wife was a generous woman. When around two years ago Rajwinder called her up and said he wanted to shift with us, Gurwinder agreed. He was looking for a job and had no house. We allowed him to live with us. For over one and a half years he lived with us and later we asked him to move to a nearby rented accommodation,” said Davinder Singh, husband of Gurwinder. However, even after moving to the rented accommodation, Rajwinder would have food at Gurwinder’s house, where he spent his maximum time.Days before the murders, Rajwinder started visiting the house of his other cousin, Gurvinder Singh, in Indrapuri. “Without informing his cousin, Rajwinder got his Aadhaar card made on his address,” said a cop.On the ill-fated day…On August 3, Davinder Singh, husband of Gurwinder, was getting ready to go to a gurdwara where he performed as a raagi when Rajwinder came home. He asked for tea and had breakfast after that. Davinder left home around 10.30am, saying he would be home by 1.30pm. After this Rajwinder forced Tajinder, who lived with her daughter at her parents’ house, to go to her sister Sukhwinder’s house on 33 Feet Road.Tajinder said, “My sister was shifting to another house. Rajwinder asked me to go and help her. Around 11.45am, Rajwinder called me to confirm if I have reached there.”Prior to this, around 10am, Rajwinder called Mandeep, son of Gurwinder who lived separately. Mandeep said, “Rajwinder asked if I have searched a job for him. I said I don’t have time and I could not take his responsibility. After that the phone disconnected.”A suspicious characterRajwinder was a suspicious character. Gurwinder’s neighbours said he was an introvert and had no friends. “We never heard Rajwinder’s voice. He hardly spoke to anyone and walked head down,” said a neighbour.Another neighbour added, “It is hard to believe that Rajwinder executed the murders. He looked so calm and quiet. We never saw him arguing with the family. I doubt if money made him commit the triple murder.”Kin doubt money the motiveThe family’s kin doubt Rajwinder killed the three for money. “Someone must have provoked him or a rivalry must have driven him to commit the murders,” said a relative.“When my father and sister left the house, Rajwinder was alone at home with my mother. He could have killed her and fled with money. But he waited for both the children to reach home,” said Sukhwinder.Davinder said, “Heetak comes home around 12.30pm and Mandeep around 1.30pm. The accused waited for them to reach home and then hammered them to death. I still don’t understand why he killed my wife and grandchildren.”A cheatADCP-IV Rajveer Singh said, “Initially, Rajwinder told Gurwinder that he has returned from Canada. To impress the family, he took them out for dinner. Few days later, he told them that he has suffered losses in the share market and that he would stay with them. He also asked them to help him get a job. This way, he entered their house.”He duped many people on the pretext of getting made their driving licences, Aaadhaar card and PAN card. He also borrowed money from several of them, he added. On tracing the accused, the official said, “Every person is being questioned. Rajwinder never shared anything with anyone.”
