New sewerage treatment plant to curb Buddha Nullah pollution

Ludhiana: In order to curb increasing pollution levels in Buddha Nullah, the state-level technical committee conducted a meeting with officials from the MC and other departments and a approved detailed project report for installing a new sewerage treatment plant in Jamalpur on Wednesday. Along with this, two effluent treatment plants have been approved for treatment of waste coming from dairy complexes on Tajpur Road and Hambran Road. The dairy owners are also polluting the Buddha Nullah by throwing waste and cowdung inside the sewerage system which further chokes entire system at STPs as well as the drain. This treatment plant will be installed at cost of Rs 55.23 crore. Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, educationist S S Johal and many other eminent personalities will be a part of this event.

Along with this, two effluent treatment plants have been approved for treatment of waste coming from dairy complexes on Tajpur Road and Hambran Road. Two STPs in Balloke and Bhattian will also be rehabilitated. These projects will be funded under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transmission (AMRUT).A detailed project report was prepared for installing new STP in Jamalpur having the capacity to treat 50 MLD of sewage as the existing STP is not functional and waste water is being thrown inside the drain untreated. This treatment plant will be installed at cost of Rs 55.23 crore. However, the civic officials have put a condition that before installing the new STP, the installation of common effluent treatment plants to treat the waste coming from dyeing units will have to be completed.Along with this, rehabilitation plan of STPs at Bhattian and Balloke has also been approved. This will be done at a cost of Rs 18 -19 crore. The dairy owners are also polluting the Buddha Nullah by throwing waste and cowdung inside the sewerage system which further chokes entire system at STPs as well as the drain. At the cost of Rs 38 crore, 10 MLD capacity ETP will be installed on Hambran Road and 5 MLD plant will come on Tajpur Road.While confirming the same, superintending engineer of the operation and maintenance cell, Rajinder Singh, said it was under AMRUT scheme, they have been preparing these DPRs and now, when the state-level committee has approved the plans, they will keep them in the MC general house followed by which tenders will be floated.In the meeting, the principal secretary local bodies Ajoy Sharma and technical advisor to CM col BS Dhaliwal along with officials from MC, Punjab water supply and sewerage board were present.Run on Aug 12A run, signifying the importance make Buddha Nullah pollution-free, will be organized on August 12. Environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, educationist S S Johal and many other eminent personalities will be a part of this event. Started by a city-based NGO, this campaign is now joined by a number of other people. The members of the NGO conducted a press conference on Wednesday describing their plan of action. They announced that on September 12 (just a month from this run), a session of detailed discussion with experts over this issue will be organized. The members of the NGO have requested the participants not to bring cars due to less parking space near Chand Cinema, from where run will start. If they at all need to bring cars, they should do carpooling, the NGO said.
