Dalit torture: Ex-prez of Patiala YAD among three booked

His family members suspect they have committed suicide as they left a note behind that they are jumping into Bhakra canal. He said efforts were being made to trace the missing family members. The next day he was again taken to the police station and made to sit there till the evening, but nothing could be found against him. The accused suspected he had stolen cash from the shop. The matter had even been reported to the police.

PATIALA: The police on Wednesday registered a case against three persons, including former president of the district unit of the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), for allegedly torturing a Dalit helper at a shop by stripping him, hitting him with rods and sharing the video clip on social media.The youth along with his wife and one-and-a-half-year-old son had gone missing after the incident. His family members suspect they have committed suicide as they left a note behind that they are jumping into Bhakra canal. The three have not been traced so far.SSP M S Sidhu said a case under Sections 34, 323, 355 and 506, of the IPC and Section 66E of the IT Act along with Section 3(1) (e) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (POA) amendment Act of 2015 (1 of 2016) was registered against Vicky Riwaz, former president of the district unit of YAD, Amandeep Singh Chintu, who owns a mobile store, and one Sandeep Singh on the complaint of Ravi, brother of the victim.The three along with two other accomplices had allegedly locked the youth in a storeroom and thrashed him while filming the act. The accused suspected he had stolen cash from the shop. The matter had even been reported to the police. But since nothing incriminating was found against him, the complaint had been dismissed, said Kotwali SHO Rahul Kaushik.In the video, the youth was seen repeatedly apologising to his tormentors, who continued to hit him.The victim’s family members had filed a missing complaint with the Kotwali police on August 2, in which they alleged that after returning home on July 31, he told them that he was taken to the police station and when the police refused to take any action against him, the accused took him to the storeroom. The next day he was again taken to the police station and made to sit there till the evening, but nothing could be found against him. On August 2, when his video went viral, he along with his wife and one and half-year-old son left home.The SHO of Kotwali police station claimed they had started the investigation into the missing complaint and after establishing all the facts, an FIR was registered. He said efforts were being made to trace the missing family members.
