PATIALA: Controversy over police torture of seven baptized Sikhs by the Sanaur police in Patiala district refuses to die down. On Thursday, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh demanded incorporation of sections pertaining to hurting religious sentiments of the Sikhs into the FIR registered against accused assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Narinder Singh.Gurbachan Singh, who was here to meet the victims at Government Rajindra Hospital, said a weak FIR had been filed against the accused policeman in an attempt to save him from legal action. “The crime committed by the policemen calls for more stringent sections to be added to the FIR. Turbans were tossed and the Sikh youths were dragged by hair. This is a clear violation of the Sikh religious rights,” he said. The jathedar said medical examination of the victim had confirmed that he had sustained injuries all over his body and, thus, stricter sections of the IPC should have been added to the FIR. He also demanded that the entire staff of Sanaur police station should be placed under suspension. He added that the panel constituted by the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to look into the matter was expected to submit its report soon and accordingly, help would be extended to the victims. “The Akal Takht will stand for justice,” he said.Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) organised a protest at Sanaur seeking action against the entire police station staff. A number of local organisations, including the Bhartiya Kisan Union, also joined the protest seeking transfer of all cops posted at Sanaur police station, as they had failed to protect the human rights of an individual. On the other hand, Congress leader from Sanaur Harinderpal Singh Harry Mann claimed that rival party leaders were playing politics over the issue. He said, “I condemn the incident and illegal detention of the youth in Sanaur, but the rivals are playing politics over the issue. The Akal Takt jathedar should not have accompanied a particular Akali leader to meet the youth. The jathedar had failed to reach and participate in the protest against Behbal Kalan firing incident to get the policemen booked by name.”
