Reservoirs run low as catchment areas have less rains

Both these dams and powerhouses are under the control of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). At Tehri Dam , the water level is lower by 11 feet compared to last year. The northern region states have six reservoirs under the Central Water Commission (CWC) monitoring, having a total live storage capacity of 18.01 billion cubic metres (BCM).The total live storage available in these reservoirs is 7.27 BCM, which is 40% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. PATIALA: Water level in the reservoirs of the northern region is lower as compared to last year due to below normal rainfall in the catchment area of the reservoirs. The levels of Bhakra, Pong and Ranjit Sagar dams are lower by 60 feet, 42 feet and 34 feet, respectively, on Friday as compared to the corresponding day last year. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 75% and average storage of the last 10 years during the corresponding period was 60% of the live storage capacity of these reservoirs. At Gobind Sagar reservoir of Bhakra Dam , the water level on Friday was 1,592.97 feet against last year's level of 1,652.95 while at Pong Dam the water level was 1,332.15 feet against last year's level of 1,374.17 feet. At Ranjit Sagar Dam, the water level is 1,628.38 feet against the last year level of 1,716.46 feet on the corresponding day.Meanwhile, the BBMB has asked partner states to conserve and utilise monsoon water to the maximum possible extent so that water released from the Bhakra and Pong reservoirs are minimised so as to store water for utilisation during the coming depletion period, starting from September 21.The low water levels are attributed to the occurrence of around 11% below normal rainfall in the catchment areas of the Satluj and Beas in Himachal and normal rains in Punjab. The level of water storage in the week ending on August 9 was 105% of the storage of the corresponding period of last year and 98% of the storage of average of the last 10 years.
