LUDHIANA: Two young men lost their lives crossing the railway tracks from two crossings here on Tuesday. Both the casualties were reported in the morning hours. One death was reported from a railway crossing over Buddha Nullah, while the second one was at Dhandari Kalan railway station. This is the second such shocking incident in the past three days due to the non-seriousness of local people towards their own security.Government Railway Police (GRP) head constable Satwinder Singh claimed: “One lineman informed the station superintendent, who further conveyed the message to GRP control room about a young boy in his twenties coming under the train, while crossing the track.”GRP assistant sub-inspector Sanjeev Singh, the investigation officer, said: “The body of the young boy, aged 25, was badly crushed in pieces after coming under a superfast train moving towards Delhi. The body could not be identified as no one stepped forward to claim it. In the initial stage of the investigation, police came to know the boy might be a migrant labourer from south-eastern India, working in a factory in the city.” Police recovered nothing from his clothes, when they reached the spot for further investigation.Another death was reported at the crossing of Dhandari Kalan railway station, in which Surjit Kumar Rai (27) of Uttar Pradesh got crushed by an express train when he was crossing the track. Police identified the deceased because of the documents recovered from the wallet in his pocket.Manjit Singh, head constable at Dhandari Kalan police station, said: “The train driver informed local railway officials, after which they informed GRP. The deceased came under a train when he tried to cross the track, because people residing near the tracks do not pay any importance to police alerts of not crossing the track. The youth’s father has been informed, and soon they will take the body for cremation.”GRP station house officer Indeerjeet Singh stated that in the first quarter of the current year, around 150 bodies were recovered by the local police, and an estimated 300 to 350 deaths were reported on railway tracks every year under Ludhiana GRP, including those taking selfies at dangerous spots, along with people who fall from the train while boarding it. “Lack of awareness among people is the foremost reason behind the deaths,” informed Inderjeet.
