LUDHIANA: A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Gurmel Nagar, Daba, on Tuesday.The police said Shakuntla Devi took the step after being thrashed by her husband and father-in-law. But her family accused the duo of killing her and hanging her body from the fan to make it look like a suicide.Shakuntla’s father Malkhan said in his police complaint, “My daughter had tied the knot with Dinesh Kumar in 2011. The couple has three children. Dinesh would often beat up Shakuntra in an inebriated condition. We tried to resolve the issue many a time, but to no avail .”On Monday night, Shakuntla called up his father. “She said Dinesh and his father Nathan Lal were drinking liquor. When she asked them to stop drinking and come for dinner, the duo thrashed her. On Tuesday morning, I went to her house and promised to talk to Dinesh, as he and his father were not at home. A few hours after I returned home, I received a call that Shakuntla has committed suicide,” Malkhan added.He said Shakuntla could not commit suicide and that Dinesh and Nathan Lal killed her.Daba police station SHO inspector Pavittar Singh said, “The eldest son of Shakuntla raised the alarm on seeing her hanging from the fan. At the time of the incident all three children were playing outside.”About the allegations of her father, the inspector said, “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. We are awaiting the post-mortem report.”
