Employees lift horticulture waste, sewerage waste, debris, and other material from the city, and then dump it at secondary garbage points, instead of the main dumping point at Tajpur Road. Ludhiana: To reduce excess burden on secondary garbage collection points and saving money, MC commissioner KP Brar has issued orders to officials of various branches to lift garbage related to their respective branches at their level. Employees lift horticulture waste, sewerage waste, debris, and other material from the city, and then dump it at secondary garbage points, instead of the main dumping point at Tajpur Road. Now, they have been asked to dump the same at the main dumping point, instead of giving a chance to A2Z Waste Management Limited to lift it, and then charge money from MC.Officials claimed it would help reduce at least 200 tonnes of garbage from secondary collection points, and would also help increase the pace of garbage lifting. The company is charging Rs337 per tonne from MC, and if employees clear extra garbage (other than domestic waste) at their level, it will prove helpful in faster functioning, and saving money for the corporation. As of now, the company is lifting around 1,150 tonnes of garbage daily.Meanwhile, civic employees have also told MC commissioner to give them a chance to lift domestic garbage from A and B zones, especially the dumping points on national highway road, because the company is going too slow on these points. In both zones, there are around 30 big and small dumping points. Employees have demanded some machinery for handling responsibility at their level. However, the commissioner has asked them to first take legal opinion over the issue, because they have an agreement with A2Z for 25 years. Moreover, they have been asked to conduct a detailed survey for one week over the issue, and come prepared with a plan. Only then would any decision be taken in the matter.Chief sanitary inspector of MC’s health branch, Ashwani Sahota, said: “Various branches, including Operation and Maintenance cell, Health branch, Building and Road department etc, also throw garbage collected after cleaning at the secondary points. Now, we have been asked to stop this practice.” He said employees would now throw waste directly at the garbage dump, and then get it noted down with the in-charge concerned at the dump for record.MC commissioner KP Brar said: “There is no point in throwing debris and other waste at secondary collection points when employees already load it in their vehicles. Dumping waste at the main dumping ground at Tajpur Raod will save MC not only money, but also reduce the effort of lifting garbage twice.”
