Heavy rainfall likely over the weekend

Rainfall during these days might go beyond 70mm,” said Chandigarh Met Department director Surender Paul.

LUDHIANA: There is bad news for residents on the weather front , as the monsoon is likely to retreat late by the end of September. Meanwhile, the good news for residents is that there are chances of heavy rainfall in the city by the weekend.“Normally, the monsoon retreats between September 15 and 20, but this year, it is slightly delayed and might retreat by the end of the month. Before the retreat of the monsoon, there are chances of heavy rainfall in Ludhiana on September 22, 23, and 24. Rainfall during these days might go beyond 70mm,” said Chandigarh Met Department director Surender Paul. He added that relative humidity was likely to increase in the coming days before the monsoon retreats.The Met department website has predicted a sudden fall in temperatures after September 22, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 26 degrees on September 23, and minimum expected to fall to 20 degrees on the same date.The maximum temperature in the city on Thursday was recorded at 33.6 degrees Celsius which is normal, while the minimum temperature in Ludhiana was 22.6 degrees, which is also normal for this time of the year. The relative humidity in the city was around normal on Thursday at 81%.Meanwhile, residents are waiting for the retreat of the monsoon. “Monsoon is an irritating season, as one sweats a lot and the body feels weak. We were hoping for the rainy season to end by September 15, but don’t know why it is still to retreat, as is evident from high humidity and temperatures,” said Rajesh Kumar, a businessman from Pakhowal Road.Many residents fear the spread of mosquito-borne diseases towards the end of the monsoon. “Already, cases of dengue are being reported from the city. This is mainly because conditions are favourable for mosquitoes to cause such diseases. We can only hope such mosquitoes don’t go berserk and cause a spurt in life-threatening diseases, including dengue,” said Avtar Singh, a medical student.The seasonal rainfall status of Ludhiana district suggests that while the normal seasonal rainfall for Ludhiana is 499.7mm, the rainfall that had occurred in the district in the ongoing season was 497.6mm. This suggests that monsoon in Ludhiana district in the current season was near normal.
