Varsity in Patiala at the crossroads over extension of hostel timings for girls

PATIALA: A day after the clash between two student bodies, Panjabi University was seen standing at the crossroads. While left-wing student unions — comprising AISF, PSU, SFI and DSO — are demanding extension of hostel timings for girls , the right-wing student bodies — comprising SAP, YAD, SOI, NSUI, OPUS, SWAG, ABVP, YOI and SAIFI — are opposing the demand.On Tuesday at 11.55pm, members of Students Association of Punjab (SAP) allegedly attacked the students demanding extension of hostel timings. The meeting between the protesting bodies and the university authorities remained underway till late.The sub-divisional magistrate, Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, also visited the protesting students on Thursday and asked them to maintain law and order during their protest. Sources said that the students, who were sitting on a protest near the VC’s office to get their demands fulfilled, were pelted with stones.Meanwhile, the university authorities said that they had called the student bodies on Thursday to discuss their demands. The DSO leaders on Wednesday had questioned the working of security incharge, who allegedly rushed towards the protesters, urging them to quit protest instead of stopping the group of SAP students, who allegedly attacked the sitting protesters.Following the clash, the University authorities on Wednesday declared twoday holiday by issuing a circular and claimed that only one student union was protesting over the issue of hostel timings.

The DSO leaders on Wednesday had questioned the working of security incharge, who allegedly rushed towards the protesters, urging them to quit protest instead of stopping the group of SAP students, who allegedly attacked the sitting protesters.Following the clash, the University authorities on Wednesday declared twoday holiday by issuing a circular and claimed that only one student union was protesting over the issue of hostel timings.
