LUDHIANA: Samrala police has cracked the case of carjacking of a vehicle from the Elante Mall Chandigarh at gunpoint on 10 August after they — in a joint operation with the Chandigarh police — arrested two accused in the case — identified as Sukhdeep Singh and Bharpoor Singh (both residents of Diwala village in Samrala tehsil of Ludhiana district ), who are in their twenties.Giving details, Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dhruv Dahiya said as part of a special drive against drug trafficking and misdemeanours, ASI Baljinder Kumar and the police party were patrolling Chawa Road in Samrala, when an informer provided them details about the car snatchers. He added that as per the input, the accused had snatched a Honda City car (Registration No. CH-01-AC-8796) from Elante Mall Chandigarh at gunpoint on 10 August, and were booked by Industrial Area Chandigarh police station for the crime.Police said after getting the information, ASI Baljinder shared the information with sub-inspector Naveen Kumar of Crime Branch Chandigarh, and set up a checkpost at Grain Market on Chawa Road in Samrala. It added that during checking, the police party arrested the accused and handed them over to the Chandigarh police for further investigation.Samrala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harsimrat Singh said the accused had injured two persons — Harpreet Singh (17) of Sarwarpur, and his uncle Binder Singh (35) of Sialbah Majri in Mohali, after hitting their motorcycle near Sarwarpur with the snatched car, and were booked for the offence at Samrala police station on 26 August. He added that as the police had seized the vehicle, they had asked the accused to bring the papers of the vehicle for processing a compensation case for the victims.The police officer said as the accused were not bringing the papers, they got suspicious. Then, they got the vehicle’s ownership details and reached the owner, who told them their car had been snatched. He added that then they informed Chandigarh police and arrested the accused in a joint operation on Saturday.Police sources said during preliminary questioning, accused Sukhdeep Singh told them they had planned to loot a car in which they saw a large number of people coming to the mall. Cops added that the accused had used a toy gun while snatching the car, which they had thrown away near Kharar. They further said Sukhdeep had worked at a call centre before joining a transport company near the mall, and his father worked as a driver. The other accused works as labourer and is the youngest of three brothers.Police officials said they had got suspicious about the duo, as they apparently did not seem so well off to own such a car. They added that Sukhdeep had told ASI Baljinder Kumar — the investigating officer (IO) of the case at Samrala police station — that he had bought the vehicle from Chandigarh for Rs2.62 lakh.The IO said Harpreet was going with his uncle Binder on a motorcycle from his village to Barwali to drop him at a bus stand after Raksha Bandhan celebrations, while the accused were coming from Barwali towards Diwala. He added that the accused had hit their motorcycle, after which they fell into a field. While Harpreet had suffered an injury in his thigh, his uncle had a fracture in his right leg, and is in Sector 32 medical college in Chandigarh, waiting for an operation.
