LUDHIANA: About 11 buffaloes died when the roof of a dairy’s shed collapsed due to incessant rains in Gian Chand Nagar of Lohara on Monday.The municipal corporation officials, who cleared debris from the site, said the building plan of the shed was not approved and its pillars, too, were constructed in violation of rules.The pillars were erected without using iron rods and even the roof was not constructed properly, they added.The MC and the fire brigade officials cleared the debris, brought out the dead buffaloes and rescued the alive ones. No harm to human life was reported.Superintendent engineer of MC buildings and roads department Dharam Singh said around 10.30am, they received a phone call about the incident. He said the roof collapsed because it was placed on pillars that were not constructed with appropriate material. “Only bricks and mud were used in the construction of pillars. Due to continuous rainfall, the mud was washed away, creating gaps in bricks. The pillars could not bear the burden and the roof gave in. Eleven buffaloes died and we could save six,” he added.There are many more such risky buildings in the city. The MC officials did not conduct any fresh survey after 2011 to find out the exact number of such buildings. The check in 2011 had identified 22 buildings, mostly in old city. Now the civic body is dependent on people to come and tell if there is any unsafe building in their locality.While the building branch officials blamed buildings and roads branch of the MC, the latter claimed it was the job of the former to give sanction to the plans and conduct regular checks on construction.
