LUDHIANA: Worried about the condition of roads around the City Centre structure in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) officials have requested the principal secretary of local bodies department, A Venu Prasad, to get legal opinion for the construction of a retaining wall inside the structure. SBS Nagar residents are spending sleepless nights every rainy season because the City Centre has damaged roads in the area from inside. They are afraid the roads might collapse some day if authorities do not take action at the earliest.During the rainfall on September 25, sand under the road got eroded up to 40 feet. Officials are still repairing the road by filling it with sand. The City Centre issue is in the court, and without the court’s approval, nothing can be done. Officials claimed chief engineer Mukul Soni too had come to the site after inspection of the City Centre structure and condition of roads in the area. He will submit his report to the government, after which a final decision will be taken on the issue. LIT superintending Rakesh Garg said: “We have requested the authorities to pay attention to the deteriorating condition of the City Centre site. Now, it is up to the government to take steps in this direction.”Notably, even in 2011, heavy rainfall took place in the city, after which three roads had got damaged completely due to soil erosion from under the roads. And even at that time, LIT had requested the authorities for the same thing, but to no avail . So, it is to be seen whether this time the story would be any different.
