Patiala waste management plant may be shifted to Mohali

PATIALA: Following persistent resistance by the residents of the Dudhar village where the proposed Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Plant (IMSWMP) was to come up, the state government is contemplating to shift the project to Mohali The IMSWMP has continued to remain a distant dream for Patiala Municipal Corporation (PMC) with over a large number of villagers protesting against the project. The government had earmarked around 20 acres of land that had been acquired in the said village by the PMC However, these villagers had formed a Dump Virodhi Action Committee and launched a protest against the setting up of the plant at the site. The farmer Union BKU (Dkaunda) too has been giving support to them.The protestors had been claiming that a poultry farm, a paper mill, a distillery and a polluted drain in Main village (2 km away from Dudhar) are already polluting these villages beside the pollution from another paper mill in adjoining village Bhanri was creating trouble for the residents.Due to the protest by the villager some of the top politicians including former Akali minister, Surjit Singh Rakhra and former union minister for external affairs and wife of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Preneet Kaur and also opposed the move the set up the IMSWMP at Dudhar village.While, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlining technical and financial aspects of the project was submitted following which the land was acquired by the civic body in 2013, but there the project could never take off.
