LUDHIANA: An elderly man has been fighting hard to get her 23-year-old niece settled abroad secure justice. His niece — who is settled in Adelaide, Australia — had been abandoned by her husband once he reached abroad. The family has accused that the man was already married earlier. However, to go abroad, he married their daughter.Manpreet Kaur (23) of Daipai village got married to Atarpreet Singh of Mullanpur in January 2016. She, along with her parents, are settled in Australia, while her uncle (father’s brother) Hoshiyar Singh (60), lives with his family in Ludhiana. After marriage, Manpreet lived with her husband and in-laws in Mullanpur village for a month. Thereafter, she went abroad and three months later, she called Atarpreet also there. “Everything was going fine before Atarpreet reached Australia. He would call Manpreet and her parents daily. However, once he reached abroad, he became a different person. Soon after reaching there, he started fighting with Manpreet. Atarpreet stayed with her for only two months. Meanwhile, a woman approached Manpreet and addressed herself as Atarpreet’s wife,” shared uncle Hoshiyar Singh. Initially, Manpreet did not believe that woman. However, the woman shared her pictures with Atarpreet. The woman also presented an affidavit in which they had declared themselves as husband and wife, although that affidavit was not sufficient for a legal marriage.”“When Manpreet questioned Atarpreet about that woman and the pictures, Atarpreet left the house and started living somewhere else in Adelaide. After that, we came to know that Atarpreet had married Manpreet just to reach abroad. That woman has also now settled abroad. Her parents were already living in Australia, but for some reason they were not able to call her there. Later on, she too got her visa and came to Australia. We have no idea if his parents were involved in this conspiracy or not,” added the uncle. The victim also shared that the woman was a neighbour of Atarpreet. She also attended Manpreet and Atarpreet’s wedding function, and kept sitting with the couple. It was later on that they had identified her from the wedding pictures. After knowing the truth, Manpreet lodged a complaint with Jagraon police. Hoshiyar said they had lodged a complaint with Jagraon police in November 2017. However, so far, the police have not lodged the FIR. They have also approached the state commission for NRIs, seeking justice.
