Mastermind of plot to kill ex-CM Parkash Singh Badal held

PATIALA: The Patiala police arrested Jerman Singh (24), the kingpin of the pro-Khalistan radical outfit allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate Punjab politicians, including former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his family. The team included SHO Beechwal, Bhawani Singh and SHO, Kolayat Jagdish Singh who went along with commandos and armed policemen.” Shiminder Singh, Patiala police crime investigating agency in-charge, who led the operation, said they left for Bikaner on Thursday morning following a vital clue that revealed the exact location of Jerman. He was arrested from a gurdwara in Kolayat town of Rajasthan’s Bikaner district on Thursday.The arrest comes three days after Shamli police in Uttar Pradesh had arrested three people belonging to Khalistan Liberation Front. Following the revelations, the UP police had handed over the investigations to the anti-terror squad.The joint police team tracked down Jerman to Nayagaon village in Bikaner following intelligence gathered by Patiala police and shared inputs from the central intelligence agencies.

Jerman’s name had figured in their interrogation. The trio — Karam Singh and Gurjant Singh, both residents of UP, and Amrit Singh, a resident of Haryana — had allegedly confessed to planning to target Badal and his family including his son Sukhbir, who is SAD chief and former deputy CM, and daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur, who is Union minister.They were arrested in connection with the October 2 loot of two weapons — INSAS and a .303 rifle — from a constable and a home guard in Shamli’s Jhinjhana area. Following the revelations, the UP police had handed over the investigations to the anti-terror squad.The joint police team tracked down Jerman to Nayagaon village in Bikaner following intelligence gathered by Patiala police and shared inputs from the central intelligence agencies. Police expect the accused to be brought to Patiala by Friday morning.A S Rai, Patiala range IGP, said: “We began working on the case after it emerged that the terror module plotted to target the October 7 SAD rally at Mehmadpur in Patiala, where party patriarch Badal and other senior party leaders had addressed a gathering.” Patiala senior SP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said Patran police had registered a case of car snatching against Jerman in January this year. “What we know now is that these elements were being funded by pro-Khalistan elements settled in foreign countries,” he said.Rajasthan IGP Dinesh MN told TOI, “Our team raided the Gurdwara at 11am after taking permission from the Gurdwara committee. The team included SHO Beechwal, Bhawani Singh and SHO, Kolayat Jagdish Singh who went along with commandos and armed policemen.”
