'Need to create atmosphere for writers to express freely'

PATIALA: Punjab legislative assembly speaker Rana KP Singh on Saturday said there's a need to create and maintain an atmosphere where writers and artists can express themselves freely as should be the case in a democracy.He stressed on this while presiding over a function at Kalidas Auditorium of North Zone Cultural Centre where writers and artists were awarded.After disbursing the awards he interacted with mediapersons commenting on Kartarpur corrirdor. Awards like Punjab Ratan and Patiala Ratan award encourage people to contribute well towards various fields," said former union minister Preneet Kaur.Recipients of the Punjab Rattan award included Padam Bhushan awardee SS Johal, former MP and Pondicherry governor Varinder Kataria, poet Surjit Patar, managing trustee of Sarbat Da Bhala charitable trust, SP Singh Obroi.The organisers also gave the Patiala Rattan award to 10 other people, which included the famous writer Satinder Singh Nanda and theatre artist Jagjeet Sareen amid others.
