Deepinder Kaur Deepinder Kaur Maharani Deepinder Kaur, daughter of Faridkot’s last Maharaja, Harinder Singh Brar (last ruler of erstwhile princely state Faridkot), died in Faridkot Sunday. She was 82. She breathed her last at Faridkot Palace, popularly known as ‘Raj Mahal’ of Faridkot. She mostly lived in Alipore in Kolkata, West Bengal and would come to Faridkot every October to observe her father’s death anniversary. This time she had arrived on October 17. Deepinder Kaur, a golf enthusiast and a graduate from a college in Shimla, was also the chairperson of Maharawal Khewaji (MK) Trust, formed to look after the inheritance estate of Faridkot riyaasat worth roughly around Rs 20,000 crore. She was married to (late) Prince Sada Chand Mehtab, son of Maharaja Bir Jai Vardhan from a royal family of West Bengal in 1959. Kaur, along with her son Jai Chand Mehtab, was now looking after the estate and properties left behind by her father. She is also survived by a daughter, Nisha. The Royal family of Faridkot has been embroiled in a property dispute after the last Faridkot ruler Harinder Singh Brar had ousted his eldest daughter— Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, currently lives in Chandigarh with her family- from his will after she married, at the age of 19, a man who was already married and a ‘commoner’. She, however, challenged the will and claimed her right in her father’s property taking dispute to court. The two had been embroiled in a dispute over their father’s inheritance since his death in 1989. The king’s third daughter, Maheepinder Kaur died in 2001 and the only son Kanwar Harmohinder Singh had died in 1981. Maharani Deepinder Kaur’s son Jai Chand Mehtab was present in the palace when she breathed her last Sunday. Her cremation will be held on Monday at Shahi Samadh in Faridkot. The dispute between the two daughters for their father’s estate and other properties is still pending in court. Punjab and Haryana High Court is scheduled to hear the case on November 21 in which Rani Amrit Kaur has claimed right in her father’s property. In 2013, a court in Chandigarh, responding to a civil suit filed by Rani Amrit Kaur, had declared King’s will null and void — ordering equal share in property for both daughters. But a month later, Deepinder Kaur managed to get a stay on the orders. She then moved the High Court where it stays pending. The sprawling estates for Faridkot riyaasat, worth around Rs 20,000 crore for which dispute is going on, includes Raj Mahal (a palace) and Quila Mubarak (a fort) at Faridkot; another palatial home ‘Faridkot House’ at New Delhi worth over Rs 1,500 crore, several properties in Ambala, Chandigarh, Shimla, Gurgaon, Hisar and Hyderabad; a fleet of vintage cars, orchards and bungalows and diamonds, precious stones and other jewellery.
