JALANDHAR: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) on Sunday expelled senior party leaders - sitting Khadoor Sahib MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and former MP Ratan Singh Ajnala - from its primary membership for six years for "indulging in anti-party activities". The SAD core committee also expelled Brahmpura's son Ravinder Singh Brahmpura and Ajnala's son and former MLA Amarpal Singh Boni for six years from the party's primary membership.Just a week ago, the SAD had expelled another Taksali leader and former minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan from the primary membership of the party on November 3.Clockwise from top left: Ajnala, Brahmpura, Ravinder and BonyBrahmpura, Ajnala and Sekhwan had first shown signs of dissent on September 30, but in a much guarded language. In an emergency meeting held then, they said they had discussed the situation in the party. The equations, though, turned bitter soon as the rebel leaders demanded a change in party leadership and openly took potshots at SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and criticized his close relative and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia Reacting to his expulsion, Brahmpura lashed out at Sukhbir and Majithia, accusing them of hijacking the party and making it a private limited company. He said they (the expelled leaders) would hold a meeting to decide on their further course of action. Ajnala, however, maintained that they were Akalis and would always remain so. “We are fighting for a righteous cause. It is the rule of one family and dictatorship. What we are saying now, we have been saying it at party forums,” he said.Accusing Sukhbir of running the party like a dictator, Brahmpura added, “After the party lost the assembly election very badly, I, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Sewa Singh Sekhwan clearly blamed Sukhbir for it and asked that he be asked to step down.”SAD spokesperson Harcharan Bains said the party regretted that Brahampura, Ajnala and their sons had been acting in a manner which showed utter disregard “for the immense respect and liberal and magnanimous treatment extended to them by party leaders Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal”. He added that “as senior leaders of the SAD, both Brahmpura and Ajnala were privy to and part of every decision that the party took”.The statement also pointed out that “Brahmpura has been issuing statements against the party on the issue of sacrilege, forgetting that he himself forced the party leadership to allot a ticket for his son Ravinder Singh Brahmpura to contest as assembly candidate when Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki had resigned from the state assembly”.It also pointed out that Brahmpura got his nephew Alwinder Pal Singh Pakhoke elevated as commissioner in the Punjab Information Commission by the same government which he was criticizing today.Brahmpura also attacked Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, asking her to tell the people about her sacrifice for the party. “Does she have any other qualification other than being the daughter-in-law of Parkash Singh Badal.,” he said.
