The teachers’ respect and wages have both diminished. Teachers are the only people who can reform today’s kids, since both parents these days are working and the joint family culture dying. The Punjab government’s idea of regularising teachers’ services with unfair conditions is like giving them a boat without oars. Teachers are forced to protest on the streets, which is a loss of teaching hours.A capitalistic model of school management has killed the tradition of respect for teacher. Today’s students, who spend a hefty amount on education, are rude to their teachers, who also are not the same class anymore. Teaching is no more a fun experience in private institutions, where teachers are treated as service-class mules and made to slog for long hours. They are not even given chairs to sit. They remain under the constant watch of the cameras. Their jobs remain on contract and the wages are a pittance. The case with government schools is almost the same. We need a national policy for job security of teachers. Teachers deserve better salary, and perks, besides good treatment at the workplace.
