Two held for Rs 50 lakh robbery in Punjab

PATIALA: Police on Wednesday arrested two men, including a retired policeman’s son, within hours of armed robbers looting Rs 50 lakh from bank officials and killing a security guard at Nabha in Punjab’s Patiala district . The accused have been identified as Jagdev Singh alias Tari (35) and Amanjit Singh alias Guri (37), both residents of Sangrur. The incident occurred around 11am.Police officials said the entire looted amount, the weapon and the motorcycle used in the crime have been seized.

PATIALA: Police on Wednesday arrested two men, including a retired policeman’s son, within hours of armed robbers looting Rs 50 lakh from bank officials and killing a security guard at Nabha in Punjab’s Patiala district . The incident occurred around 11am.Police officials said the entire looted amount, the weapon and the motorcycle used in the crime have been seized. The accused have been identified as Jagdev Singh alias Tari (35) and Amanjit Singh alias Guri (37), both residents of Sangrur. They were arrested from Sangrur city four hours after the crime.The miscreants, who were waiting outside the bank, struck when the bank’s security guard Prem Chand and clerk Antrish Kumar brought a cash trunk to the grain market branch of SBI in a private taxi. They fired at Chand, grabbed the cash trunk and fled on their bike.Chand succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital while undergoing treatment. Patiala range IGP AS Rai said the police were questioning the two accused to ascertain if anyone from within the bank was also involved in the crime. However, he denied that the two could be linked to any radical organisation trying to revive terrorism in Punjab saying, “So far no radical links have come to the fore”.Patiala SSP MS Sidhu alleged that banks have not been following police instructions despite being asked several times to inform police before transferring cash in large amount.In gross violation of the cash transfer protocol the SBI hired a private taxi to move the cash. As per bank rules, cash has to be transferred in an armoured vehicle in the presence of two security guards and bank employees responsible for the cash transfer.
