Prisoner flees from police custody in government hospital

PATIALA: A murder convict managed to give a slip to two policemen on Tuesday night from the Rajindra government hospital, where he had been brought for treatment. But he managed to escape. The inquiry against the police officials deputed in jail has also been initiated.”

PATIALA: A murder convict managed to give a slip to two policemen on Tuesday night from the Rajindra government hospital, where he had been brought for treatment. The Civil Lines police in Patiala has filed a case against the convict for escaping and started probing the role of the cops on duty at that time.Police said Karamjit Singh of Ballamgarh village of Samana division in Patiala was lodged in the Patiala Central Jail. He was booked for murder in June 2011, and was sentenced for life a few months back by the local court.Police said that Karamjit was brought to the government hospital on Monday night where the doctors had operated him following some problem in his nose. The prisoner was admitted in ward number 21 of the hospital and was under the custody of wardens Lakhvir Singh and Mandeep Singh. The police claimed that after the surgery Karamjit could not wake up for more than two hours due to anaesthesia administrated for the operation.However, he woke up and walked away with the cops on duty not even realizing immediately that he had taken off.A case has now been registered against Karamjit under sections 224 (resistance to lawful apprehension) on the complaint of Patiala jail superintendent Rajan Kapoor.Investigating officer Jagroop Singh said, “The prisoner was convicted for murder and managed to escape from the hospital on Tuesday night. The two guards were accompanying him but they claimed to have believed the doctors, who had said that the prisoner cannot escape. But he managed to escape. The hunt to nab the accused is on and he will be arrested soon. The inquiry against the police officials deputed in jail has also been initiated.”
