Project for new abattoir in Patiala hangs fire

PATIALA: The project for a new modern abattoir to be set up in the outskirts of the city is still hanging fire with the government having no plans to shift the slaughterhouses and give relief to the local residents. The project was earlier tabled and presented by the civic body under the SAD-BJP rule, but it failed to take off. All birds and animals are supposed to be slaughtered in accordance with the SC rules. While, 60% of this amount was to be chipped in by the Centre and 40% was to be borne by the state government . At present, there are around 150 small and big abattoirs running in the royal city, besides some others operating illegally.The local civic body had recently sent a detailed project report to the government, but the same was not considered.

A few years ago, the corporation under the SAD-BJP rule sent a proposal to the Centre, but all in vain.Officials of the municipal corporation claimed that no funds were chipped in for the Patiala municipal corporation by the Centre which was also supposed to release its share.Under the proposed project, an estimated Rs 11 crore was to be spent to set up a slaughterhouse on the outskirts of the city. While, 60% of this amount was to be chipped in by the Centre and 40% was to be borne by the state government . The project was earlier tabled and presented by the civic body under the SAD-BJP rule, but it failed to take off."We had earlier sent a proposal to the government for the new slaughterhouse and the state government may take it into consideration soon," said Deputy Mayor Y S Yogi.Around one acre of land at the Ghalori gate was earmarked for the project a few years ago after the Supreme Court in its orders made it mandatory to shift all slaughterhouses out of the city limits.This project envisages the use of modern technologies to slaughter animals and birds. The daily permissible limit for birds, including hens and others, was extended up to 1,500 per day, while that of animals, including goats, pigs and others was extended up to 150 animals per day. All birds and animals are supposed to be slaughtered in accordance with the SC rules.
