It is worth mentioning here that the NGT had made objections a couple of years ago, when the board started using recycled paper, and has appreciated the PSEB’s decision of returning to better paper. LUDHIANA: The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has returned to the use of environment-friendly maplitho virgin pulp (paper) after gap of a few years, receiving appreciation from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in this regard. Kalohia said this move meant less national wastage, as the same books could be reused, and less paper would be needed for text books next year.Reducing the weight of paper also seemed to increase cost-effectiveness as the board can save crores of rupees this way. The board is stepping up to ask school heads to procure books in good condition from students of the current session, so that they can be passed on to students in the next session. PSEB chairman Manohar Kant Kalohia, formerly a civil servant, disclosed here on Friday that the state government made clear instructions not to use paper for textbooks that may prove a health hazard for students.According to details of the issue, Punjab school textbooks were printed on recycled paper for a couple of years due to lack of finances, as the Welfare Department had not paid for the supply of free books to schools students.

The government had made partial payment of about Rs130 crore to the board during the current financial year, and in turn, the board has started using better paper. However, sources disclosed it is not just financial assurance that has prompted PSEB to use costlier and more eco-friendly paper, but the institution has taken a couple of measures, such as strengthening of the book bank culture, and lowering of the weight of paper from 75gsm to 70gsm to balance the total cost.
