Balachaur court refuses extension of police custody of lifer

NAWANSHAHR/PHAGWARA: After remaining in police custody for seven days Arvinder Singh, who has already been sentenced to life imprisonment for waging war against the state along with Surjit Singh and Ranjit Singh, was remanded to judicial custody with co-accused Guerdeep Singh in a fresh case registered under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) by a Balachaur court on Saturday.“Police had sought custody for five more days stating that they need to question the accused, but we opposed it and the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate Rupinder Singh did not grant police custody and remanded him to judicial custody,” said Arvinder’s counsel Kulwinder Kaur. The fresh case was registered on February 7 and both Arvinder and Gurdeep were taken on police remand for seven days on February 9.When asked what have been the findings of their questioning, Balachaur DSP Rajpal Singh, who is investigating officer in the case, said the investigation was still on and he could not disclose details at this juncture.Arvinder, Surjit and Ranjit were convicted by Nawanshahr additional sesssion judge Randhir Verma for waging war against the state on the basis of recovery of books, literature and pamphlets kept by them for propaganda and inciting people to establish Khalistan and they were sentenced to life imprisonment on February 5 last.The Nawanshahr police had registered a fresh case against Arvinder claiming that he had provided a pistol and bullets to one Gurdeep Singh, who was arrested in a case under NDPS Act on January 17.
