Cobra gang leader Afridi arrested

JALANDHAR: The counter intelligence (CI) wing and Jalandhar police on Tuesday arrested Iqbal Singh Afridi , the head of infamous Cobra gang, and seized .32 bore revolver, 17 live cartridges from his car.AIG (Counter Intelligence) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said Afridi was involved in more than 20 cases, including murder, attempt to murder, gang wars and extortion. He said they had information that Afridi was heading towards Jalandhar in his car to meet his relatives.Khakh said Afridi was a college dropout and had later formed his gang. "Afridi had tried to escape from the police custody in 2007 when he was being taken to a court. Last February, he had allegedly stripped a woman naked in Fatehabad and was also wanted in a case of gang war in Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran, that had left four people dead. He was a proclaimed offender (PO) in many cases and wanted in Mohali and Tarn Taran too.Khakh said they acted on a tip-off and a joint team of counter intelligence and Jalandhar police began checking vehicles.

Last February, he had allegedly stripped a woman naked in Fatehabad and was also wanted in a case of gang war in Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran, that had left four people dead. He was a proclaimed offender (PO) in many cases and wanted in Mohali and Tarn Taran too.Khakh said they acted on a tip-off and a joint team of counter intelligence and Jalandhar police began checking vehicles. He said they had information that Afridi was heading towards Jalandhar in his car to meet his relatives.Khakh said Afridi was a college dropout and had later formed his gang. "Afridi had tried to escape from the police custody in 2007 when he was being taken to a court. However, in 2009, he managed to escape," he said, adding that he was later arrested in 2016 by Mohali Police, but he came out on bail in January 2017 and resumed his criminal activities.Khakh added that Afridi has partnership in three liquor venders and also has fishing contracts in the Harike area. Besides, he was into cricket betting and had links in the betting world.
