So, safety measures at the chambers will be strengthened to prevent such thefts in the future,” states a point in Bhanot’s manifesto. Many candidates say there is a need to improve security at the lawyers’ chambers.“While the first floor is under proper surveillance, the rest of the storeys of the complex only have a handful of CCTV cameras. In order to upgrade security and check thefts here, we need to install high-definition CCTVs on all the floors. Apart from this, clean washrooms, proper water facility, upgraded library, stipend for newcomers, more chambers for lawyers etc. are on our agenda,” said Sushmita, who is contesting for the executive post.Meanwhile, those who have witnessed thefts say that security upgrade at the chambers is a must.Advocate Tirth Grewal, in whose chamber one such theft took place, said following a power cut on 11 March, he had gone outside his on the first floor with his colleagues. But when they all returned, a desktop LCD was missing from their chamber.“The security cameras were not working at the time as there was no power. We suffered a loss of Rs12,000. Security definitely is a major issue here and we want it to be addressed so that lawyers don’t have to suffer any further,” said Grewal.Another lawyer on the condition of anonymity said near the end of 2017, around 15 thefts had taken place in the lawyers’ chambers in just 30 days. The number has reduced since, but the problem continues to exist, he said adding that guards in adequate numbers should be deployed at the complex for overall security besides putting an end to the thefts.
