Timely action by officials on Thursday night saves structure Ludhiana, August 23 A small portion of the Sutlej bundh at Garhi Fazal village, near Mattewara, was eroded last night but timely measures taken by the officials concerned averted a major damage to the structure. A big portion of the bundh was washed away on Wednesday. An official said: “A portion of the bundh was eroded yesterday. The staff immediately swung into action and pressed into service machines to fill up the eroded portion with soil. The situation was timely handled.” He said the soil was getting eroded due to the circular motion of the river near Garhi Fazal village. The embankment has been eroded at multiple locations in the past one week. Officials of the Drainage Department, Forest Department and the police have been deployed at the site. Sandbags and trees logs were being placed to protect the bundh. Member of Parliament from Fatehgarh Sahib Amar Singh visited the site to inspect the ongoing repairs. He appreciated the efforts of the village Sarpanch and the officials concerned, he said. Meanwhile, Sarpanch Gurnam Singh said the bundh repair had been sped up. “We are satisfied with ongoing work. But, we want the government to make sure the bundh is properly strengthened,” he said. Executive Engineer of Drainage Department Harjot Singh Walia said they were working day and night to protect the bundh. He said the situation was under control.
