Family gives away newborn child of daughter, police launch probe

Our CorrespondentMandi Ahmedgarh, August 24Dehlon police has initiated a probe into an incident in which a family of Duley village had allegedly attempted to get rid of a newborn male child, born to their unmarried daughter at Civil Hospital three weeks ago. Nirmala Devi, mother of the victim, accused her brother-in-law, Raj Kumar, of allegedly raping her 19-year-old daughter about ten months ago. Devi alleged that Raj Kumar raped her younger daughter when he found her alone at home. Considering the birth of a child before marriage a stigma, Nirmala Devi and her husband gave the child to Surjit Singh, a sweeper at the Civil Hospital. Kataria said Raj Kumar had been arrested but the police were yet to ascertain whether any financial transaction has taken place between the family and Surjit Singh.

Nirmala Devi, mother of the victim, accused her brother-in-law, Raj Kumar, of allegedly raping her 19-year-old daughter about ten months ago. We came to know about the pregnancy when we took her for a check up for abdominal pain, she added. Devi alleged that Raj Kumar raped her younger daughter when he found her alone at home. The accused is the victim’s paternal uncle. He has been booked under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and was arrested today by the police, led by investigating officer Subhash Kataria, while he was trying to leave the area. Considering the birth of a child before marriage a stigma, Nirmala Devi and her husband gave the child to Surjit Singh, a sweeper at the Civil Hospital. Kataria said Raj Kumar had been arrested but the police were yet to ascertain whether any financial transaction has taken place between the family and Surjit Singh.
